MOJO Monday Sketch Challenge #217: What I Created

Square cards are hard for me for some reason. I don't know if it is just because of the limited space or what. I used the color coach for the Baja Breeze with Cajun Craze and Basic Gray for two of my cards and the color coach for Basic Gray with Melon Mambo and Old Olive. I made a total of three cards. One is square for the challenge and the others are a standard A2 size for mailing. I used the SU! stamp set Happiest Birthday Wishes, SU! Cardstock, Ribbon and Buttons.

One of my friends, Lynda, sent out a request for her dad's 90th birthday. Her dad, Johnny, shares a birthday with my mom. She wanted us to flood him with birthday wishes! I am sure it was like a tsunami if he is anything like his daughter... so sweet and fun to be around. I did add a scallop under the tag on this one because I felt it needed a little something extra to help make it pop. Here is the card I made for him:

So here we have three different cards made from a sketch. It goes to show that even if a sketch is square or not square that you can always tweak it to become your own. The color coach is a great tool to use when looking for color combinations... I have a hard time with cards for guys so I really like to use the COlor Coach as my starting point.

Thanksgiving Card- Leaves

Here is that card I made for my daughters' teachers and my family.

I used the SU! stamp set Falling Leaves for the leaves and my sentiment. I stamped them on Whisper White CS using SU! Classic Ink in: More Mustard, Pear Pizzazz, Pool Party, and Soft Suede. My card base is More Mustard. I used the SU! DSP in Spice Cake for the card front. After I had stamped my leaves, I punched them out with 1.25 inch (I think anyways that is the size!!) square punch and popped them up with dimensionals before layering them on Soft Suade CS. My sentiment was layered on Pool Party CS. Note that I did ink a lot of the edges on this card.

Thanksgiving- Kleenex Holder

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. My family and I did. This week I am going to finish sharing my Thanksgiving projects. This one is a cute travel sized kleenex holder. I think it turned out really cute. For a video on how to make one of your own check out France Martin's video here. She does such a great job with her videos and I love to watch them.

I used the SU! Spice Cake DSP, More Mustard CS, Pool Party CS, and Pear Pizzazz CS to decorate the outside. I made my big flower rosette with the Spice Cake DSP also and added a jumbo Spice Cake button with Soft Suede ribbon tied in the middle. I used one of the stamps from Grateful Greetings for my message and I stamped that on Very Vanilla and matted that in Pear Pizzazz.

MOJO Monday Sketch Challenge #217

Thanksgiving Card- Punch Art Ribbon Turkey

I love, love, love this card. I made 6 of them... one for each of my girls, my sister in New York, and my nieces and nephews on my husband's side. I wish I could take credit for the adorable turkey but I can't. You can find the directions for him on Lynn Pratt's blog here.

I used Pear Pizzazz for my card base and SU! Spice Cake DSP for my card front. Since I had some small strips of the DSP left over I flipped them over and matted them on Pool Party for that something extra. My gretting is from Teeny Tiny Wishes... the most versatile and must have set ever.

I will apologize for the lighting. I tried to get some close-ups of him and they just didn't turn out. I live in central Ohio and we are in a rainy holding pattern so there is not a bit on natural light coming in.

I will note that one difference in my turkey is that I used the flame from the Cupcake Builder punch for his wattle (I am just going to go with that but I am not sure that is the correct name for it).

Triangle of Treats

This trianlge box is easier than it looks. I used a 4 1/8 by 8 1/4 piece of More Mustard cardstock. I scored it on half long wise at the 4 1/4 mark. At each end, I made a little tick mark in the center. I then scored it from the each corner the tock mark on both sides, turned it around, and scored the other side. I then cut a triangle from the SU! DSP Spice Cake. I adhered it to the front. I used a small rectangle of Pool Party cardstock to set the tag off a little more. It needed a little something behind the tag. I did round the corners.

I used the Thanksgiving stamp from the set Gift Givers. I used Chocolate Chip ink to stamp it on Very Vanilla. I set this aside to dry a bit. After it dried, I used my ink pads and a blender pen to color in the image in Pear Pizzazz, Pumpkin Pie, Pool Party, and More Mustard. I punched it out with SU! Curly Label punch. I layed my stamped image on my Pool Party cardstock with dimensionals and then popped the whole thing up on the front of the box. I punched holes at the top on each side and tied the triangle box closed with some Soft Suede 3/8 inch Taffeta Ribbon. But wait... before you tie it closed be sure to fill it with a favorite treat of the intended recipient. I am filling mine with Hershey Kisses with Caramel. OKAY!! I admit it... they are one of MY favorites.

Thanksgiving Goes to School- Part 3

To share with you today I have a handy, dancy, and oh so cute Post-It note holder. I got the post it notes at my local office supply store. I cut a 3.25 inch by 6.75 inch piece of cardstock in Soft Suede. I then scored 3.25 from each of the long ends giving my a .25 inch spine. I punched a 3 7/8 scalloped square and run it through the new SU! Houndstooth Embossing Folder. I love the look of it! I adhered that to my front. I next used the SU! DSP in Spice Cake and punched out a Fancy Flower. I used the new SU! 3/8 inch Ruffled Ribbon in Pool Party and tied a knot in it before adding it to the middle of the flower.

I added about a half of a stack of Post-It notes to the inside and adhered it well!! I then took my Big Crop-A-Dile and punched a hole through the entire thing. Lastly, I just used a metal ring and put it through the hole. The ring can be opened to remove the Post-It note or you can just pull it away from the ring.

Thanksgiving Goes to School- Part 2

Today is a beautiful jumbo paper clip. I got the paper clips from my local office supply store. I stamped the Fancy Flower from the SU! stamp set Punched Posies. I then cleaned my stamp and used my Stampin' Write markers to color the swirl part and just outside of it with More Mustard and used Soft Suede to color the very center. I punched them out with my 3/4 inch circle punch. I popped it up with SU! Dimensionals.

 

I punched out a second stamped Fancy Flower, but since it was for the back I just left it in all Pool Party. I used my Tombo glue to adhere the jumbo paper clip to the back flower. I added dimensionals stacked 2 high in about 5 places. I put the top Fancy Flower on and used my Crystal Effects to just the Soft Suede center. Make sure after you do this that you set it aside to dry. It is very easily messed up if you accidently toch it so I placed it far away from my workspace.

Thanksgiving Goes to School- Part 1

One of the gifts for the girls' teachers for Thanksgiving will be this junior legal pad. It is so easy but so cute! I got the junior legal pads at my local office supply store. I added a strip of Pool Party cardstock to the bottom edge of the top part after I punched it with my Scallop Trim Border punch. I didn't add it to my practice one and it just needed something... I think it adds a lot! I then covered the top, top edge, and back with SU! DSP in Spice Cake.

I stamped the Fancy Flower with the SU! set Punched Posies in Pool Party on Whisper White cardstock. I punched it out with the Fancy Flower punch. After I did that I cleaned the stamp and used my Stampin' Write marker in More Mustard and colored just the center of the Fancy Flower. I punched the center out with a 3/4 inch circle punch. I added a Glimmer Brads Basic in the Champagne. I popped the center piece up before adding it to my flower and then popped the entire Fancy Flower up before centering it on the junior legal pad.

I played along with the MOJO Monday sketch challenge and I have to say I am quite pleased with the results. Check out that perfectly roasted turkey! Want to make one of your own? Check out Lynn Pratt's blog Stamp-n-Design. I am not sure where I first saw this but I remembered seeing it and searched for it so I could use it this Thanksgiving.

I used Very Vanilla for my card base and inked the edges with Soft Suede. I added a More Mustard card front and layered a 3 inch circle from the SU! Spice Cake DSP, which I also inked. Isn't it so pretty. I wanted to bring out the blue in, SU!'s In Color Pool Party so I choose that for my pennant. My turkey was made using the bird punch and owl punch, both from SU! I inked the bird a little, used the Designer Label Punch for my Whisper White serving tray after I inked it, and popped it all up with dimensionals. This is layered onto Very Vanilla cardstock with the edges also inked up. I will admit if I had some silver cardstock on hand the tray would have been silver. I added my sentiment from the SU! set Thankful For. Since I didn't want a bow like the sketch, I decided to add 3 Very Vanilla brads.

I really love how it turned out and soon it will be in my Aunt Peggy's mailbox:)

MOJO Monday Sketch Challenge #214

Come and play along with the gals over at MOJO Monday. Here is their latest sketch challenge. I am working on my card so I can play along and I hope you do too!

Playing along with the weekly challenges helps to keep me on my toes with my cardmaking. It seems like there is no time left in the day by the time the kids are in bed, but using a sketch allows me to create a card quickly, but also allows me to enjoy my hobby during the week. My tip for you is to look at the challenge and spend the rest of the day thinking about what you might like to do. I try to think about what the purpose of my card is, possible color schemes, and then what stamp set or punch art I might like to use. When I actually sit down to make the card, it is pretty well planned out in my head and I can pull it together in a matter of minutes. Trust me, the design part is the hardest part... with the sketch you are halfway there.

Because Nice Matters

The Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge was a bit hard for me because I had never used Ricer Rock before nor do I use a neutral palette when making cards very often if ever. I am not sure why because I do love the look of it. It is just so clean and elegant.

I guess that is what inspired me to use the SU! Elegant Lines Embossing Folder. I used Early Expresso Cardstock for my card base. After embossing the River Rock Cardstock I adhered it to the front. The Perfect Pennants Die was a must have for me as soon as I saw it, and I used the scalloped circle one to cut out my Soft Suede Cardstock. Really, the Perfect Pennants is a great buy because you get 5 shapes on a single die. I spritzed the scalloped circle with some shimmer paint and then adhered it to the front. I used one of the leafs from the set Falling Leaves and stamped it onto Whisper White cardstock. I used a 1 3/4 circle punch to punch it out and then popped it up with dimensionals on the scalloped circle after I inked the edges by dragging the cardstock across the inkpad.. I didn't want my card to be Thanksgiving-y so I pulled out a way old stamp set called Sweet Little Sentiments because I felt like it just has the message I wanted to send with this card... 'because nice matters.'

PPA Color Challenge

Come and play along with the gals over at Pals Paper Arts with their NEW color challenge. The colors are: Early Expresso, Soft Suede, and River Rock.

I will admit that I have NEVER used River Rock before. Seriously, never!! The package is brand new and sitting on the shelf brand new. It is a good thing I left if in the plastic wrap because I am pretty sure the paper would have been dusty. SO, now I will take the plungs and open the pack. Come back tomorrow to see what I came up with.

Jack of All Trades Halloween Card

Here is the card that I made for the girls' teachers:

I used Old Olive for the base and added a piece of the Frightful Sight DSP. I stamped the pumpkin from the Jack of All Trades stamp set in Cajun Craze and then cut it out with my paper snips. I then stamped the hat from the same stamp set and snipped it out. I popped it up with dimensionals and set it on top of the pumpkin. I stamped my sentiment on Whisper White card stock using the 'happy halloween' from Teeny Tiny Wishes. It is such a must have set because it is so versatile! I punched it out with a retired SU! oval and layered it on top of a Cajun Craze oval punched out with the Large Oval punch. I adhered it to the front and I was done.

On the envelope I stamped the hat again in Old Olive to give it that extra something. I think it turned out pretty cute:)

On a funnier note, when I first started this card I was looking at the DSP sideways and did not realize there were bats on it. I thought it was just a random geometric pattern. I was going to have the card opening the other way so I am very glad that I noticed it BEFORE I glued everything down.

Halloween Treats Part 3- Witches Boot

Today I am going to share with you the Witches Boot treat holder. I made this using the SU! Stocking Die and added a 3.5 inch circle to the end to get the boot effect using Basic Black card stock. I got the idea from Fran Sabad's blog but changed it up a bit. And yes, it is okay for you to get your inspiration from someone and then make it your own as long as you give credit where it is due. I have seen so many versions of the witches boot since I made mine and it is really fun to see how people have changed this or that to make their boot unique.

I snipped out a partial circle using the 1 3/4 inch circle punch and adhered it all together. I just used a pair of paper snips to define the heel freehandedly. I then placed it in my SU! Spider Web embossing folder and ran it through the Big Shot for the fabulous texture. I used the Box #2 from SU! to make my center, but cut off one end so it would be longer and sealed the top, which then became the side. Does that make sense? I adhered a boot to each side of the box using sticky strip. Instead of using cardstock for the laces, I decided to use ribbon. I used my Crop-A-Dile to punch out two holes on each side and laced the Pumpkin Pie grosgrain ribbon to lace the boot up. I liked how the laces turned out, don't you?

 I used the Lace Border punch from SU! to punch out Concord Crush cardstock and added it to the top of the boot. I then filled it with some candy for the girls teachers. I could easily fit several pieces of candy in there. I used a Kit Kat, M & M's, and a Twix bar, but I think I could have even put a few more in.

Halloween Treats Part 2- Fancy Reese's Cup in Disguise

As another special treat for Halloween, I disguised a Reese's Cup in a fancy costume. I took Frightful Sight DSP and cut it into 6 X 4 pieces. I got the idea for these from my CHIC 'n Scratch and her Week #4 of Halloween. I had saved a copy of it but has a hard time finding the actual link on the website so this link will only take you to her website and you could search from there if you wanted the actual tutorial. If you do look at the tutorial you will notive her measurement for the DSP was 6 X 4 1/4... I changed it to 4 so that I could get 6 from one sheet of DSP instead of only 4 and it worked out just fine.

I added adhesive to oneof the short edges and then along the middle section of each of the long edges. I placed my Reese's cup in the middle and folded the short edges so they would meet and pressed down. I then sealed each of the ends. I used the crimper to add the texture at the ends... cute touch I think! I used the Extra-Large Tag from SU! to punch out my Whisper White tag. I then stamped BOO! in Cajun Craze and the ghost in Basic Black, both of which are from the SU! Spooky Bingo Bits set. I added SUI Old Olive Grosgrain Ribbon and added that using a luggage tie. I snipped the ends of the ribbon to make sure they looked neat and I was all done!

I made these for the workers at the after school program my girls attend, their busdriver, and their teachers. They really were quick and easy but oh so cute.

Halloween Treats Part 1- Clear Cellophane Treat Bag Topper

To share with you today I have a Halloween treat bag filled with orange and black Sixlets. These are a great treats to send to school with the little ones because they are processed in a peanut free facility.

I used Stampin' Up!'s clear cellophane treat bags that are in the Holiday Mini Catalog on page 11. They are perfect for filling with a variety of different candies from M & M's, Sixlets, candy corn, Reese's Pieces, and just about any other small candy. Don't want to use candy? How about pencils?

I filled the bag with alternating colors. The bag has a sticky strip at the end so it is easy to close after you fill it. Just peel of the protector and close. I then used the Round Tab punch from SU! to punch out Cajun Craze cardstock. I folded it in half and stapled it to the top of the bag. So the recipient didn't have to tear the tag, I made sure the sticky strip end was at the bottom and attached the tab at the opposite end. I then used the Happy Halloween stamp for the SU! set Gift Givers in Basic Black and stamped it onto Whisper White cardsotock. I colored then in using SU! inks in Cajun Craze, Soft Suede, and Daffodil Delight for the pumpkins, stems, and beaks. I then used a SU! Decorative Label punch to punch out the image and in a few quick seconds my project was complete because I just had to glue them over the tab with adhesive.

I made about 40 of these. I handed them out to my classmates in my Classroom Management class, the busdriver, both of the girls' teachers, the after school program workers, and the secretaries, principal, guidance counselor, and IS teacher at the school, who Lizzie takes her tests with. I hope it brightened their day, even if it was just a little.

Fairies... You Have to Believe In Them to See Them

I did get to join in the fun over at Mojo Monday with their sketch challenge (see below for earlier post and link) that I shared the other day. I made this card with my sister in mind. She lives in hot, hot, hot Texas so she isn't close at all and a card will brighten her day. When she was visiting last summer, I introduced her to cardmaking and she loved it! She went home with a stash of cards but I am sure they are all gone by now. She wasn't able to visit this summer, sadly. When she was here last year this stamp set, A Little Bit of Magic, was in the 2010 Summer Mini but I really didn't have enough time to order it when she was here. After she left I knew I had to get it so next time she comes she can use it... she really fell in love with it. I ordered it, school started, and the stamp set became very lonely. Every so often I thought about getting it out and making a card to send to her but school, coaching, and the girls activities didn't leave me much time to play. When I saw this Mojo Monday sketch challenge, I knew it was time to finally play with the stamp set. Here it is:

I used cardstock in Old Olive and Rich Razzleberry. I colored in my image use blender pens and ink pads. These are the colors I used: Old Olive, Rich Razzleberry, Blush Blossom, Soft Suede, River Rock, So Saffron, Daffodil Delight. and Pretty in Pink. That is a lot of colors, but it really was fun to color it in and see it come to life!!

So... the scalloped edge?? I used my SU! Tasteful Trim Sizzix Die but I wanted the whole piece and not just an edge. Not to worry. I diecut the edge out and then adhered it next to my solid piece. I hid my seam with a piece of ribbon. I used the small oval (now retired) and the large oval to stamp and mat my sentiment. My hello is from Fundamental Phrases (which I think retired a few years ago maybe??)

Color Challenge: What is That Kitty Thinking?

Color Challenge: Mission Accomplished! I really had a tough time deciding what I wanted to do for the Paper Players Color Challenge (see below for original post). After some sleep and much thought I decided that I would use the new stamp set from the Stampin' Up! Summer Mini called Touch of Kindness. It really is super cute! Here is the card I came up with:

I had a tough time photographing it because it kept having all these weird shadows, but I think you can still view it well. Isnt't that kitty and those birds adorable?? For the card base I used Crumb Cake, the embossed strip on the left is Baja Breeze and I used the NEW Solid Stripes Embossing Folder. Don't you love it?? The stripes go up and down so I turned my paper to to the side a little to that the stripes would be diagonal. My photo corners (this SU! punch is now retired) are Basic Gray and Poppy Parade. I used all FOUR colors from the challenge. My sentiment is also from the SU! set Touch of Kindness.

For my coloring: I did the birds in Baja Breeze, bird bath in Crumb Cake, flower petals with Poppy Parade, leaf and grass in Old Olive, the car in Basic Gray, and his collar in Poppy Parade. I used my Watercolor Wonder Crayons for all the coloring except what I did in Poppy Parade. For that I used my ink pad and blender pen.

Sketch Challenge- MOJO Monday

I am not sure where the week has gone to! I don't know if I am going to get a chance to make anything for this sketch challenge, but thought I would still share it with you. This is Mojo Monday's Sketch Challenge:

On a Birthday Roll

Color Challenge... I have no idea what I am going to do!!

Well, it is a sleepness night as I wait for the dryer to finish up so I thought I would go ahead and share the new color challenge from Paper Players. Here it is:

I have to admit these are not colors I use a lot much less all together. Well, I use the Poppy Parade and the Crumb Cake but not so much the other two. As I look at these colors I am wondering what in the world I am going to come up with. Even though I am clueless now, this is why I like doing challenges... both color and sketch ones because it helps keep my ideas fresh and they take me out of my comfort zone so I try things like new color combos that I originally might not have. You never know when you are going to happen upon a new favorite. I still remember the day I fell in love with Crumb Cake. It was only last summer!! Maybe is it the pretty new name??

Okay, I am not going to stay up much later so I can have plenty of time to sleep on what I want to do.

New Sketch Challenge

Happy Birthday!

I came upon Waltzing Mouse Sketch Challenge a few hours to late to enter my card that I made, but that's okay. I am helping to celebrate three birthdays this weekend so I needed some birthday cards anyways and I thought the sketch was perfect for what I wanted to do for Alana's card. She will be the BIG ONE along with her twin brother!

Sorry if the sentiment seems a little out of focus. I took the picture several times and it just always seemed to be blurry. So, are you thinking where did she get that zig zag stamp?? Well, wonder no more. It is actually Stampin' Up!'s In Stitches Jumbo Wheel (pg. 143 of the 2011-2012 IB&C). Whenever I see a wheel that I think will be awesome for making my own patterned paper or to add something extra to a card like this one... I always buy an extra one. I keep one of them as a wheel and then I peel the rubber off of the other one. You can easily mount them onto Cling Mount foam (#124236 on pg. 205) and then make your own design that fits your project. There are even some new ones in this catalog that will also be perfect for this. (HINT: Buttons & Blossoms #124088) and I would highly recommend the Clear-Mount Perfectly Placed Guides (#121785) when using these because it really makes a big difference in getting everything straight! Be sure to pop those cupcakes up!!

PPA Color Challenge... Not Singing the Blues!

Yes, blue is my favorite color and Stampin' Up! has a lot of great shades of blue. This weeks PPA (please see the post below to see the link) color challenge was Not Quite Navy, Marina Mist, and Bashful Blue. I love the look of white embossed images when I am doing a card with a monochromatic theme. It just looks so sharp against the different shades. Since it is summer, I wanted my card to have a more light and summery feel to it so I used the Bashful Blue as my card front and the medium shade of Marina Mist as my card base. I kept the darker shade of Not Quite Navy for the accent colors and used it here and there on the card. Since the Pocket Silhouettes images are petite, I love using them on small squares or circles so that I can use several of the images on one card. I like the variety it gives and the clean look. And what can I say about my sentiment "thinking of you" from Teeny Tiny Wishes? I love, love, love that stamp set. It is really the most versatile set you can buy and has a saying for pretty much every occasion. It really should be in every stampers collection.

Color Challenge- Not Singin' the Blues Here!

Over at Pals Paper Arts, they are hosting a color challenge this week. Don't worry... you don't need to sing the blues while working on this color challenge because you will have a lot of fun working with these great shades of Blue. Blue is actually my favorite color so I know I am going to enjoy this challenge.

As soon as I get my card completeed, I will be sure to share it! We have a busy weekend so I am getting the house ready for that so it might be a few days.

As promised, here is my card I made for the Mojo Monday Sketch Challenge. If you would like the link please see my post below. This is a thank you card for my brother-in-law and his family for hosting an impromptu family get together as we celebrated our great nation's indepenence.

Cardstock: SU! Cherry Cobbler, Night of Navy, Crumb Cake, and Whisper White
Inks: SU! Cherry Cobbler Classic ink and Whisper White Craft ink
Stamps: Thank You Kindly
Punches: SU! Star Punch (now retired but check the clearance rack in a few weeks- will it make it?)
Other: Clear embossing powder, SU! Linen Thread, Adhesive
